Projects

Permanent and temporary artwork programmes involving the integration of art, architecture, landscape construction and urban design.

Ottawa Light Rail Transit

Client: City of Ottawa

The Ottawa Light Rail Transit Programme is a $2.1 billion infrastructure project, including the construction of 13 transit stations.

The $10 million art programme was developed, working cooperatively as a member of the project design team, providing multiple opportunities for a variety of public art projects that engage the architecture and landscape designs of the stations. Extensive stakeholder communication was an integral component of the development of this programme.

“Brad’s vast experience in public art and complex urban design projects, along with his integrity and passion, were the driving force in developing an art plan for the City of Ottawa’s Light Rail Project.

His excellent communication skills and diplomacy, his keen eye for design in the built environment and cultural sensitivities, were essential in seeking approbation from the many stakeholders involved and inspiring confidence.”

Lawrence Allen District Public Art Strategy

Client: Build Toronto
Project Lead: Urban Strategies
Co-consultant: Fela Grunwald Fine Arts

The Allen District Public Art Strategy is based on the distribution of public art opportunities across the entire district, on the basis of district type.

The Strategy has allowed for wide and varied artistic responses, over time and incrementally by avoiding limitations on the content of art expression. A shared, district wide public art funding mechanism is proposed to allow for a sequenced and strategic public art distribution on the most significant and publicly accessible sites.

Lawrence Allen Public Open Space Master Plan

Client: City of Toronto
Project Lead: Urban Strategies

The public art strategy for Lawrence Allen allows for a broad range of public art expression, from small scale, temporary projects to large scale to permanents projects to artists working on design teams in the creation of public space and infrastructure.

The specific cultural context of this neighbourhood suggested that the approach to public art should recognize the competition for available capital improvement dollars such that funds allocated to public art should maximize value to the neighbourhood through its participation in the creation and execution of any public artworks to the greatest extent possible.

Through the engagement of the community in the conception, development and execution of public art, it is hoped that a sense of pride of place and of stewardship for artworks created and for the broader community, will be fostered.
